On Veterans Day 1996, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) unveiled a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., designed to travel to communities throughout the United States. This three-quarter sized replica of the memorial measures 375′ long and 7.5′ tall at its apex. Etched in The Wall’s panels are the names of 58,281 men and women who sacrificed their lives serving in the Vietnam War.
Bringing The Wall home to communities throughout our country allows the souls enshrined on the Memorial to exist once more among family and friends in the peace and comfort of familiar surroundings. The traveling exhibit provides thousands of veterans who have been unable to cope with the prospect of facing The Wall to find the strength and courage to do so within their own communities, thus allowing the healing process to begin.
Volunteers are a crucial part of The Wall That Heals experience for visitors that will travel to Delaware County to see it. Our goal is for each Visitor to come away with great memories of the entire exhibit; and a very real understanding of the Vietnam War and its impact on the men and women who served, their friends and families, and our Nation. Our most important objective is that every Vietnam Veteran that visits this Memorial while in our community feels an appreciation for their service and sacrifice and experiences true healing for a deep and long-standing pain.
The Wall That Heals will be staffed with Volunteers around the clock for the duration it is in our care here in Delaware County. There will be many visitors from all over the state and country, including students coming from the local and area school districts. You will be issued a t-shirt to identify you while assisting and attending at The Wall That Heals, or manning the Command Post where Volunteer Hospitality and the First Aid Station are housed. You will be asked to attend a short Volunteer training on Wednesday September 11th, at the site, at 6 pm. Wherever you volunteer, we are hopeful that your experience is personally rewarding.
There are a many opportunities to volunteer:
– Assisting with Set Up of The Memorial
– Assisting with Tear Down of The Memorial
– The Command Post, our Volunteer Refreshment Station
– The Wall (either at the Visitors Tent or Assisting Visitors)
Please note: the suggested minimum age for volunteers is 13. All volunteers under the age of 18 must be supervised by an adult.

After welcoming thousands of visitors, The Wall That Heals ended its time at Havener Park with a closing ceremony this afternoon. Thank you to everyone who came out this week to visit, reflect, honor and remember. And thank you to all the staff members and volunteers who dedicated their time. It was another beautiful evening at Havener Park, spent in solidarity with those who have given so much. The Wall is lit orange tonight to honor those impacted by Agent Orange and PTSD. Thank you to the hundreds who showed up and participated. It was truly special.
Tomorrow is the last day for The Wall That Heals in Delaware County Ohio and Liberty Township. A closing ceremony begins at 1:30 pm. Taps will be played at 2 pm and anyone is welcome to help disassemble and pack up The Wall so it can journey on to its next stop in Connecticut. All the best wishes to Elaine, Dean and Sandra, our new friends from #VVMF. Your work here has been stupendous. ... See MoreSee Less
